Jan. 3: Square dance lessons for beginners start from 6-8 p.m. in the upper room of Seymour Community Center, 107 S. Chestnut St. Lessons continue on Sundays until graduation in April. First two are free. Lessons taught by Marvin and Linda Rumph, Star Promenaders' regular club callers. Call 812-445-3610 for more information. Star Promenaders dance each second and fourth Saturday at 8 p.m. at Redding Elementary School in Seymour. All square dancers are welcome to attend the regular dances.
March and April: Master Naturalist Classes at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, 6-9:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the visitor center. Call 522-4352.
March: Hand-made Chocolate Easter Eggs will be sold by the Brownstown United Methodist Church until March 21. Three flavors in either dark chocolate or milk chocolate - peanut butter, caramel and solid. They sell for $1 each and make great gifts. Eggs will be ready for pick-up at the church on March 22. March 13 & 14: National Maple Syrup Festival held at Burton's Maplewood Farm, 8121 W. Co. Rd. 75 S., Medora. All ages can tour sugar house, see maple syrup being made, historical demonstrations throughout, music pancakes, refreshments, petting zoo. For information, call 812-966-2168.
March 11, 12 & 13: "Beauty and the Beast" musical by the Brownstown Central High School Choral department at 7 p.m. Tickets available from cast members and at the Peoples Bank and Family Drug in Brownstown or by calling the high school office at 358-3453. Tickets are $7.
March 12 & 19: Storytimes at the Brownstown Public Library, from 10-10:30 a.m. for children between the ages of two and five who have not begun kindergarten. Children will listen to stories and participate in finger plays, singing and puppet shows. Parents are welcome to stay with newcomers until they feel their child can attend independently.
Saturday, March 13: Pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. at the Austin Lions Club train depot. There also will be a booth at the Crothersville Fire Department yard sale. Proceeds go toward a peanut dog for Morgan Amos of Austin.
Saturday, March 13: Spring Kick-off sponsored by CARD (Crothersville Area Revitalization and Development) at the Crothersville Vernon Township Fire Station from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Indoor flea market and food. Prize drawings at 2:45 p.m. (must be present to win). Proceeds to purchase flags and a flagpole for the fire department. Saturday, March 13: Open practice for all classes, beginning at noon, at Brownstown Speedway, located on Highway 250 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds, one mile southeast of Brownstown.
Saturday, March 13: Computer Classes at Brownstown Public Library from 10-11 a.m. will teach participants how to use an internet browser, a search engine and hot to set up and use an e-mail account. From noon until 1 p.m., "Windows Basics and Maintenance" will teach how to create a briefcase and keep documents updated on the go. Also, learn several steps that will keep your computer working at lighting-fast speed.

Tuesday, March 16: A program by Tom Wright about his travels to Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The program, presented at 6 p.m., is free and open to the public.
Thursday, March 18: Brownstown Development meeting at noon at the Chamber office, 119 W. Walnut St. Purpose of the meeting is to initiate a community partnership program that invites regular cooperative participation by area residents to serve as a forum for identifying and building on community assets. The comprehensive plan recently created by Ball State's Building Better Communities will be introduced and discussed. March 18 & 19: Brownstown Kindergarten registration at Brownstown Elementary School. Brownstown, Driftwood, Grassy Fork and Owen townships will register from 6-8 p.m. in the school cafeteria on Thursday, March 18 and from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the art room at BES on Friday, March 19. Parents attending the evening registration will register alphabetically according to last name. Those with last names beginning with A-L will register from 6-7 p.m. and names beginning with M-Z will register from 7-8 p.m. Pershing and Salt Creek students will register from 2-5 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in Freetown Elementary School's conference room.

April is History Month in Jackson County! The Jackson County History Center (formerly the J.C. Historical and Genealogical Societies) will be hosting various events at the pioneer village and museum complex in Brownstown. Watch the newspapers and listen to local radio stations for stories about Jackson County history. On April 6 & 8, third-grade school children will be invited to the village to visit the museum and see the log school/meeting house. On April 18 at 2 p.m., the public is invited in for the same tour. School "marm" is Trudy Reynolds and the trader is Tom Cooley. Other reenactors at all locations. The month's activities will culminate in a pioneer craft demonstration and historical reenactments at the village on May 1. More information will follow. To sign up, contact Margo Brewer at 358-2924.
