CONTEST FUN AT THE 2010 MELONFEST

This year’s Melonfest has a variety of fun contests for children and adults alike. The annual festival will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11, around the courthouse square in Brownstown.

After opening ceremonies on Friday at 5 p.m. on the main stage, Relay for Life Team Daybreakers will announce the winner of the princess contest at 5:15 p.m. Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Girls in kindergarten through sixth grade may enter by calling Peggy Hehman at 358-3319 or 525-1564 or Mindy Stahl at 216-3032.

Register during the princess contest for the baby contest which begins at 5:30 p.m. and is sponsored by Country Friends Home Ext. Club. Registration for the watermelon crawl for toddlers will be held during the baby contest.

The watermelon crawl is sponsored by the Brownstown Christian Church Day Care and will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Mr. Melonhead Contest sponsored by Brownstown Animal Hospital will follow at 7 p.m.

On Friday evening at 7 p.m. on the second stage there will be a watermelon eating contest sponsored by Tiemeyers Farm Market. Gift certificates will be given as prizes for the different age groups participating.

Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. on the courthouse lawn there will be registration for the corn hole tournament sponsored by Jackson-Jennings Co-Op and Kova Farm Supply. The tournament is for ages 16 and older and begins at 9 a.m. Rules and sign-up sheets are available at the chamber office, 119 W. Walnut St. or at www.brownstownchamber.org on the Melonfest page.

Registration for the melon bowling tournament sponsored by Starlight Bowling Lanes will be held at 10 a.m. and the tournament will begin at 10:30 a.m.

The seed spitting contest will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday on Walnut St. between U.S. 50 and Poplar St. The watermelon relays begin at 3 p.m. followed by the watermelon steal at 3:30 p.m.

The Melonfest Committee will be sponsoring a melon walk in front of the information booth on Walnut St. at various times during the festival.
