Brownstown Hardware opened on June 23, 1909 at the same location as it is today. Owner Wilbert Wessel, Jr. started working at the hardware store in 1949 and purchased the business in 1996. His wife, Donna; daughter, Kim Lucas; daughter and son-in-law, Dena and Ron Hutchinson, and grandson Shawn Ross have spent large portions of their lives working in the family business.
The store provides the homeowner's hardware, plumbing, electrical and garden needs as well as household and gift items. This is the place to go for that hard-to-find doo-dad and down-home, friendly and personal service. Even if you don't know what you need, Jr. or his staff probably do!
Brownstown Hardware was featured in the premier issue of Southern Indiana Business Source magazine in the spring of 2009. The article was called, Models of Posterity, and highlighted long-lived businesses. On Oct. 5, 2009, Brownstown Hardware was awarded the Indiana Historical Society's Centennial Award at the annual corporate and foundation recognition dinner at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
