John Sheets, David Benton Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, recently spoke to the Brownstown Exchange Club on the current SAR Veterans Christmas Drive. Sheets came dressed in his SAR uniform. The club pledged financial support to this worth cause.

John Sheets was a special guest speaker at a recent Brownstown Exchange Club meeting at Brock’s Restaurant. Sheets, dressed in his David Benton Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution uniform spoke on the chapters current Veterans Christmas Drive. Sheets said the chapter has for several years organized a holiday gift drive for men and women currently residing in the Veterans Medical Center in Louisville, Ky.

He said many do not have family or finances to supply even basic items to make day to day life bearable. Sheets said that this year they are teaming up with the John Hay Chapter in Washington County to increase the amount of items delivered to the center.

He said in years past that because of the generosity of concerned citizens and organizations like the Exchange Club they have delivered two or three vans loads of items each year to the center. He spoke of how proud he was when he sees the joy these small gifts give to those who gave for the service of out country and are now in need.

Sheets said items the men and women need include clothing: sweatshirts and pants, socks, house shoes, underwear, bathrobes, and non-skid slipper socks; toiletries: tooth paste, tooth brushes, denture cleaner, dental floss, nail clippers, deodorant, shaving cream, chap stick, shampoo, hand lotion, and free-standing mirrors; snacks: candy, nuts, peanut butter, crackers, apple sauce, diet drinks, and sugar-free snacks; and stationery, postage stamps, reading books, and the most prized item word find puzzle books.

Sheets said the unwrapped items (for security reasons) can be dropped off at V.F. W., American Legion, and V.F. W. Auxiliary location in Seymour, or at the Veterans Affairs Office 1222 W. Bloomington Rd (Bloomington Rd and St Rd 135 S) in Brownstown.

Contact Jim Harvey, Seymour, 522-9719, Darrell Scifres, Scottsburg, 752-4419, or John Sheets, Medora, 812-966-2320 for more information. Sheets said he would pick up items if needed. They plan to make the trip to deliver items a couple of days before Christmas.

The Exchange Club voted to make a finical donation to the SAR and asked members to donate items if possible.

The Exchange Club meets at 7 a.m. every Tuesday morning at Brock’s Restaurant. Visitors are always welcome. The club’s annual Christmas party is Thursday December 17 at Brownstown Central High School cafeteria. Reservations can be made by contacting Bill Edwards or any of the officers.
